You don't need a separate AI prompts generator app. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini will each write a prompt for you if you ask, and Google's own Gemini guide tells you to do exactly that with one line: "Make this a power prompt." Below is a copy-paste template that turns any of the three into a prompt generator, the developer tools OpenAI and Anthropic built for the same job, and what our 27-run test of long vs short Claude prompts found about which parts of a prompt do any work.

**Turn any chatbot into a prompt generator**

```
I want you to write a prompt for me. My task: [one line about what you need].
Before you write it, ask me up to five questions about anything you'd need to know: who it's for, the facts only I have, the length and format I want, and anything to leave out.
Then write the prompt in this order: the task in one sentence, who it's for, the facts, the length and format, and what to leave out. Use [square brackets] for anything I should fill in each time I use it. Give me only the prompt.
```

Paste that into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, fill in the first line, answer its questions, and you get back a reusable prompt with blanks for the parts that change. It's our own template, built from the slots the vendor guides and our test agree on, which the rest of this page walks through.

## Is there a free AI prompts generator?

Yes: the chatbot you already use works as one when you ask it to write the prompt. Google's Prompting guide 101 calls this making Gemini "your prompt editor": start a message in the Gemini app with "Make this a power prompt:" followed by your draft, and Gemini suggests how to improve it.

A prompt that asks the AI to write a prompt is called a meta-prompt, and the AI companies use the same trick in their own tools. Three are worth knowing:

- Any chat app: the template above, or Google's "power prompt" line in Gemini.
- OpenAI's Playground: a Generate button on OpenAI's developer platform.
- Anthropic's Console: a prompt generator Anthropic added to its developer console in 2024.

The two developer tools sit on the companies' developer platforms, outside the ChatGPT and Claude chat apps, and are built for people writing prompts for their own software. For everyday prompts, the chat-app route does the same job.

## How do I get ChatGPT to write my prompt?

Paste the generator template at the top of this page into ChatGPT with your one-line task, answer its questions, and it hands back the finished prompt. Save that prompt and fill in the brackets each time you reuse it.

OpenAI also has a button for this. Its prompt generation guide says the Generate button in the Playground "lets you generate prompts, functions, and schemas from just a description of your task," using meta-prompts that "incorporate best practices to generate or improve prompts."

_OpenAI's guide to the Generate button in its developer Playground. Screenshot of OpenAI's prompt generation docs, November 5, 2026._

OpenAI prints the full text of that meta-prompt on the same page, so you can read what it asks for. The prompt it produces opens with one line describing the task, then adds optional steps, an "Output Format" section, optional examples and notes.

For ChatGPT users, OpenAI Academy's prompting guide boils a good prompt down to three steps: outline the task ("what you want, who it's for, and why"), give helpful context, and describe your ideal output. That is a short ChatGPT prompting cheat sheet straight from OpenAI, and the template below covers all three.

## Does Claude have a prompt generator?

Anthropic has released two, both for developers. It added a prompt generator to its developer Console in May 2024: you describe what you want to achieve, and Claude writes an editable prompt template that uses Anthropic's own prompting techniques.

_Anthropic's announcement of the Console prompt generator. Screenshot of the Claude announcement, November 5, 2026._

Those templates mark the parts that change between uses as variables in double curly braces. Anthropic's example for translating code to Python uses {{CODE}} and {{LANGUAGE}}, so one template works for any piece of code. The old docs page for the Console generator now forwards to Anthropic's general prompting best practices page.

Anthropic's current prompt engineering overview sends anyone without a first draft to a "Prompt generator notebook": the Metaprompt in the Claude Cookbook. Its own description says it's "designed to solve the 'blank page problem'." You type your task, it writes a prompt template, then tests it on example values. It runs with a Claude API key, works for single question-and-answer prompts, and its authors note the result "is not guaranteed to be optimal."

In the Claude chat app, the generator template at the top of this page does the same job. If you already have a long prompt, this one from our test trims it down to the lines that change the answer:

**Trim a long Claude prompt**

```
Here's a prompt I use a lot. Rewrite it for Claude Opus 5.5. Keep every fact, preference and format rule. Remove instructions about how to think or how carefully to work (step by step, double-check, don't be lazy), personas, all caps, and pressure like tips or "this is important." Then list what you removed so I can put anything back.
```

## The copy-paste prompt template (fill in 5 blanks)

This five-blank template works in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It's adapted from our 27-run test, and each blank is one of the kinds of lines that changed the answer there:

**The 5-blank prompt template**

```
[What you want, in one sentence.] It's for [who will read it and why]. [Any facts it needs: dates, rules, numbers.] Keep it [length and format]. [Anything to leave out.]
```

Here it is filled in for a job a lot of people search for, a ChatGPT resume prompt template. Swap the brackets for your own details:

**Filled in: a resume prompt**

```
Rewrite the summary and bullet points of my resume for a [job title] role at [company]. It's for the hiring manager reading the applications. Here's the job ad and my current resume: [paste both]. Keep it to one page, and start each bullet with a verb. Don't add any job, title, number or skill that isn't in my resume.
```

The table shows what goes in each slot, the resume example, and which vendor guide recommends it. The last two rows are optional extras the guides list.

Anthropic's prompting best practices give a quick check for any filled-in template: "Show your prompt to a colleague with minimal context on the task and ask them to follow it. If they'd be confused, Claude will be too."

## Gemini's four-part prompt structure

Google's Prompting guide 101 names "four main areas to consider when writing an effective prompt": persona, task, context and format. Its sample prompt fits all four into one short prompt for Gmail and Google Docs.

_Google's four-part structure, with each part of the sample prompt color-coded. Screenshot of Google Workspace's Prompting guide 101, November 5, 2026._

That makes a ready Gemini prompt template:

**Gemini four-part template**

```
You are a [role] in [industry]. [What you need: summarize, write, change the tone, create]. Use [the files, notes or details it should work from]. [Format: bullet points, a table, under 200 words].
```

Google adds that "you don't need to use all four in every prompt." Its tips also say to write in natural language, be specific and iterate, keep it concise, make it a conversation with follow-up prompts, and use your own Google Drive files. The last tip is the built-in prompt generator for Gemini users:

## Free prompt libraries from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google

Each company publishes example prompts you can copy, and so do we. Here's where they are as of November 5, 2026:

Claude prompt libraryAnthropic's old prompt library address now forwards to its prompting best practices page, which shows "less effective" and "more effective" versions of example prompts side by side. For prompts we ran ourselves, see 12 Claude prompts we ran, with the results, each with what it produced.

ChatGPT prompts libraryOpenAI Academy's prompting page has sample prompts (a product launch email, a policy summary, a sprint retrospective) and a table of example prompts by role, for marketing, sales, HR and finance.

Gemini prompts by jobGoogle's Prompting guide 101 groups its suggested prompts by job, including administrative support, customer service, marketing and project management.

Prompts from AI for MortalsOur build posts publish the prompts word for word. Pat rebuilt the Notability note-taking app with Claude Opus 5.5 in six prompts, one per phase, and you can read every prompt Pat used to rebuild Notability word for word. In another test, adding one line pointing Claude at Grenade, a free page of rules on GitHub, made Claude's work reports easier to read, and that line is a reusable block you can add to any prompt.

When you use the same template every week, you can save it once instead of pasting it. That's what Claude Skills: reusable instructions you set up once are for, and one of Pat's, the Seedance Prompt Builder, is itself a prompt generator: it turns a plain-English video idea into a ready-to-paste prompt for the Seedance 2.0 video model.

## What AIFM's prompt tests found about long prompts

Short prompts with the right facts did as well as long ones. In our 27-run test of long vs short Claude prompts, we ran three everyday work prompts on Claude Opus 5.5 three ways (long, trimmed and bare), and every one of the 27 runs got the main answers right, including the traps we planted.

The long versions, about 180 to 200 words each, had everything people like to add: an expert persona, numbered rules, all caps, "think step by step," triple-checking and an offer of a $200 tip. None of those changed whether Claude got the answer right.

Four kinds of lines did change the answer, and they are the blanks in the template above:

- Facts Claude couldn't know without you, like your refund policy
- The length and format you want
- What to leave out, like "only give me the email"
- Who it's for, like "This is going to our CEO, so flag anything in the data that looks off"

Some long-prompt rules cost time or backfired. The long customer email prompt took about 7 seconds per reply against about 4 for the trimmed one, with the same email at the end. A "write No deadline when none is stated" rule made Claude label a task "No deadline" even though the meeting tied it to a newsletter date, where the shorter prompts wrote "Before Nov 1."

A long prompt still makes sense when the length is the material: a style guide, examples you want matched, or a client brief.

## Questions people ask about prompt templates and generators

What is a prompt template?A prompt template is a prompt with blanks for the parts that change each time, like the five-blank template above. Anthropic's Console marks those blanks with double curly braces; in a chat app, [square brackets] you fill in by hand work fine.

What is a meta-prompt?A meta-prompt is a prompt that asks the AI to write a prompt. OpenAI's Generate button and Anthropic's Metaprompt notebook both run on one, and the generator template at the top of this page is a short one you can paste into any chat app.

What structure should a prompt follow?The vendor guides share the same core: the task, the context, and the format you want. Google adds a persona, OpenAI's developer guide orders it as identity, instructions, examples and context, and our test found who it's for and what to leave out also changed the answer.

How should I structure a Claude prompt?Anthropic recommends being clear and direct, adding context, giving examples and, when a prompt mixes several kinds of content, wrapping each part in its own XML tags such as <instructions>, <context> and <input>, per its prompting best practices.

Is there an AI prompt cheat sheet?The short version from the three companies: say the task, give the context, describe the output (OpenAI Academy); add a persona if it helps (Google); and show your prompt to a colleague to see if it makes sense (Anthropic).

Can AI generate example prompts for me?Yes. Ask it for several versions of a prompt for your task, the way OpenAI Academy suggests asking for options ("Suggest two different ways to present this report"). Anthropic also suggests asking Claude to generate more examples from the ones you give it.

How do I make a custom prompt template I can reuse?Fill in the five-blank template once, keep the brackets for the parts that change, and save it. In Claude you can turn it into a skill, so you describe the job and Claude follows your saved steps; see our Claude Skills page.

Is there a prompt template for Claude Code?Our 12 Claude prompts post has the three we used to build a small invoice app in Claude Code. They describe the problem in plain English, say what you want to see, and ask Claude to tell you how to open the result.
