To cancel ChatGPT, cancel in the same place you paid for it. If you subscribed on chatgpt.com, open Settings, then Billing, and under Cancel plan select Cancel. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel through your Apple or Google Play subscriptions instead, as OpenAI's cancellation guide explains. Cancelling stops the next renewal. It doesn't refund past charges, and you don't need to delete your account to stop paying.

Claude and SuperGrok follow the same rule: cancel on the website, with Apple or with Google Play, whichever took your money. Google AI Pro is cancelled in Google One. Every step and refund rule on this page comes from each company's own help pages, checked on November 5, 2026. If you're cancelling to switch, our guide to what Claude, Gemini, Grok and the other ChatGPT alternatives cost has each plan's price.

## How do I cancel my ChatGPT subscription?

On the web, sign in to ChatGPT, open your account menu, select Settings, then Billing, and under Cancel plan select Cancel. Those are the four steps in OpenAI's help article, and they cover personal plans bought on chatgpt.com. If the billing controls are missing, OpenAI suggests signing in to the same account in a different browser and trying again.

_The web steps, boxed in red, from OpenAI's "Canceling your ChatGPT subscription" article, captured November 5, 2026._

If you paid through the App Store on an iPhone or iPad, Apple manages the subscription, so you cancel it on the iPhone. Open the iPhone's Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, ChatGPT and Cancel Subscription, and confirm. If there's no Cancel button and you see an expiration date, OpenAI says the subscription may already be cancelled.

If you paid through Google Play, open the Play Store app, go to Subscriptions, pick ChatGPT and select Cancel subscription. Make sure you're signed in to the Google account that bought it.

If you're not sure where you paid, OpenAI suggests checking your purchase receipt, since a subscription bought on chatgpt.com never shows up in your Apple or Google Play list. Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date, or that charge may already have gone through.

## ChatGPT Business: who can cancel, and where

Only a workspace owner can cancel ChatGPT Business, from Workspace settings, then Billing, according to OpenAI's Business billing guide. The full path in the cancellation article is: sign in, open your account menu, select Workspace settings, then Billing, Manage plan and Cancel subscription. If you're a member without billing access, ask your workspace owner.

These steps cover self-service Business plans. OpenAI's article doesn't cover ChatGPT Enterprise or Edu, which are contracted plans.

If you only want fewer seats, you don't have to cancel. Owners can schedule a seat reduction, which takes effect at the start of the next billing cycle. OpenAI says unused seats are generally non-refundable for the period you've committed to, and removing a member frees their seat without lowering the number you pay for.

Cancellation normally takes effect at the end of the current billing period. After that the workspace can be deactivated: OpenAI says this doesn't delete the workspace's data, but members can't get to it until an owner reactivates the workspace.

## Can I get a refund on ChatGPT?

Sometimes. OpenAI's refund article says payments are generally non-refundable, but it lists exceptions. For an unused individual subscription, a discretionary refund may be available if you contact OpenAI within seven days of the charge, there's been no substantial use, and you meet its other conditions, such as limits on repeat refunds. OpenAI also says an accidental purchase or forgetting to cancel doesn't qualify on its own.

Where you live changes the answer. OpenAI says residents of the EU, UK and Turkey can get a prorated refund if they cancel within 14 days of purchase, and it lists separate rules for Korea and Brazil.

How you ask depends on how you paid:

- Paid on chatgpt.com or Google Play: log in to ChatGPT, open the Help Center chat and request a refund there.

- Paid through Apple: OpenAI says App Store refunds must be requested from Apple.

For an approved web refund, OpenAI says it processes the refund within 5 to 7 business days, and your bank may take longer. If a refund is granted, the paid access that charge covered normally ends.

## Claude Pro, Max and Ultra: Settings, then Billing

On claude.ai or the Claude desktop app, click your initials or name in the lower left corner, choose Settings, go to Billing and click Cancel. Those are the steps in Anthropic's cancellation article, which covers Pro, Max and Ultra.

_The web and desktop steps, boxed in red, from Anthropic's help article, captured November 5, 2026._

If you subscribed in the Claude app on iPhone or Android, tap your initials in the top right corner, then Billing, then Manage subscription, and follow the prompts. Apple or Google handles that payment.

Yes, you can cancel Claude at any time. Anthropic says "your cancellation will take effect at the end of your current billing period and you can continue using your paid plan until then," and it asks you to cancel "at least 24 hours before your next billing date" to avoid the next charge.

Refunds are narrower. Anthropic's refund article says all payments are non-refundable except as its Consumer Terms of Service provide or where the law requires. In the EEA and the UK, you may get a refund within 14 days of purchase, prorated by how much you used. To ask, click your initials, choose Get help, send a message and pick Claude Refund Request. If you paid on iPhone, only Apple can refund it, and a refund there doesn't cancel the subscription, so cancel too.

## Google AI Pro: cancel it in Google One

Google sells AI Pro through Google One, so you cancel it in Google One settings. From Google's Gemini help page: go to gemini.google.com, click Settings at the bottom, then Manage subscription. That opens Google One settings, where you click Cancel membership, then Cancel.

_The three desktop steps, boxed in red, from Google's "Manage your Google AI plan from Gemini Apps" page, captured November 5, 2026._

On an Android phone, open the Gemini app, tap Menu, then your profile picture or initial, then Manage subscriptions, and under "Cancel plan" tap Cancel membership. On an iPhone or iPad, Google's steps use the Gemini web app: tap Menu, Settings, Manage subscription, then Cancel membership.

You can also cancel straight from Google One. Google's cancellation page says to go to Google One on a computer, click Settings, then Cancel membership, and confirm. If you signed up through Apple's App Store on an iPhone and later moved to Android, Google says you have to use the App Store on another device to change the membership.

Google says storage plan purchases are non-refundable in most countries, and that the plan stays yours for the time you paid for. App Store purchases are refunded by Apple, and Play Store purchases follow Google Play's refund policies, according to Google One's refund policy page.

## SuperGrok: cancel where you paid

If you bought SuperGrok on grok.com, sign in and open Settings, then Billing, or go to grok.com/?_s=billing, where you can change the plan, update payment or cancel. That comes from the Grok FAQ, which also says ad blockers can stop the Manage Subscription button from opening; try an incognito window or a different browser. Apple handles App Store subscriptions, and Google Play handles Android ones.

If you pay for X Premium instead, the Grok FAQ says X processes its refunds where the law requires them, through X's own refund request form.

For refunds on SuperGrok bought on grok.com or Google Play, the FAQ points you to the xAI Refund Request form, signed in with the account you subscribed with. It says approved refunds usually come back to your original payment method in 5 to 10 business days. App Store refunds go through Apple.

## How do I remove my payment method from ChatGPT?

Go to Settings, then Billing in ChatGPT on the web, open the card's ••• menu under Payment methods, and select Remove. That's from OpenAI's payment method article, which also says removing a card doesn't cancel a subscription, erase past invoices or reverse charges.

If the card is marked Default, its menu may show only Edit. Add another card, set it as the default, then remove the old one. OpenAI says an active subscription, or a cancellation that hasn't taken effect yet, can also block removal. On ChatGPT Business, only workspace owners can manage the card. If Apple or Google bills you, change the payment method in your Apple Account or Google Play account instead.

## What changes when you cancel or downgrade

On ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Pro, you keep what you paid for until the end of the current billing period. After that:

- ChatGPT keeps your account. OpenAI says you don't need to delete it to stop future charges.

- Claude stops new monthly API credits on Max and Ultra. Credits you already have stay usable until they expire at the end of the billing cycle, and they can't be refunded.

- Google AI Pro ends access to Gemini in Pro: you can't start new chats with Pro or continue ones created with it. Your Google account keeps up to 15 GB of storage at no charge.

Check your Google storage before you cancel. If you're using more than the free amount, Google says Gmail stops sending and receiving messages, Drive stops syncing and uploading, and Photos stops backing up until you clear space.

Deleting an account is a different step from cancelling. OpenAI says deleting your ChatGPT account cancels a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT, but it doesn't cancel one billed through Apple, so cancel the App Store subscription first.

Downgrading is also an option. In Google One, click Manage membership, then Change membership plan, and pick a plan under "Downgrade options," per Google's plan page. On ChatGPT, the plans themselves are changing: from December, ChatGPT and Codex will share one usage allowance on Plus, Pro and Business, and OpenAI recently changed what each ChatGPT Pro plan now includes. If you drop to Free or Go, OpenAI plans to test picture ads on those plans in the US.

## Questions people ask

Is it easy to cancel ChatGPT Plus?
On the web it takes four steps: open your account menu, then Settings, Billing, and Cancel under Cancel plan. If you paid through Apple or Google Play, you cancel in the store instead.

Does uninstalling the ChatGPT app cancel my subscription?
No. OpenAI says uninstalling the app doesn't cancel anything. Cancel through the platform where you bought it.

How do I cancel my OpenAI Ireland Limited subscription?
The same way as any ChatGPT subscription. OpenAI's EU terms name OpenAI Ireland Ltd as the company you contract with if you live in the EEA or Switzerland. Those terms also give you 14 days after purchase to cancel and get a refund prorated from the day you ask, through OpenAI Support or the model withdrawal form.

I cancelled, so why was I charged again?
OpenAI says that if you cancelled less than 24 hours before the billing date, the charge may already have gone through. It also suggests checking whether another ChatGPT, Apple or Google account has a second active subscription.

Can I cancel if I can't sign in to ChatGPT?
Yes, for subscriptions billed directly by ChatGPT. Contact OpenAI Support with the email on the account or subscription plus two billing details, such as the card's last four digits or the date of the latest charge. Never send the full card number. For Apple or Google Play, recover that store account first.

Will OpenAI warn me before a price rise?
Yes. OpenAI's terms of use promise at least 30 days' notice of a subscription price increase, which takes effect at your next renewal, so you can cancel first.
