# Grok Bot Users Ran Out of Usage Days Early, and Musk Says It Cost Too Much

> Grok Bot subscribers saw their weekly usage meters jump to 100% days before reset, and Elon Musk said serving Grok Bot cost too much for the money it brought in. Here's what users saw, what SpaceX has and hasn't said, and what each plan buys you.

Over the weekend, subscribers to Grok Bot, SpaceX's AI agent app that does jobs like shopping on a computer of its own, found their weekly usage [maxed out days before it was due to reset](https://techcrunch.com/2026/11/02/elon-musk-throttles-grok-bot-limits-due-to-unsustainably-high-costs/). Some of the meters jumped overnight, while their owners weren't using it.

When one of them asked Elon Musk for a reset on Sunday, he replied on X that "the cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue."

Musk hasn't said whether SpaceX cut the Grok Bot usage limits, by how much, or what Grok Bot costs to run. SpaceX hasn't posted any change to its plans either.

## What Grok Bot users saw on their usage meters

The subscriber who asked Musk for a reset had [posted earlier](https://x.com/DogecoinNorway/status/2116921365957857634) that their usage was at 100% with four days left until the reset, when they normally never hit the cap at all. Others on X said their meters had gone from as low as 50% to 100%.

The longest record of it is on the forum of Cursor, the SpaceX coding app sold in the same subscription as Grok Bot. A thread there titled ["Grok Bot weekly usage meter flips between 77% and 100% in real time"](https://forum.cursor.com/t/grok-bot-weekly-usage-meter-flips-between-77-and-100-in-real-time/176909) passed 140 posts.

The first poster, on Cursor's top plan, watched the meter at the bottom of the Grok Bot app flip from 74% to 77% to 100% and back, over and over, starting just after midnight on November 1. Their own tracking showed about 77.7%, with no change to their plan or billing.

Replies in the thread describe the same thing in different shapes. Some saw the bot report one number while the Settings page showed double, and others watched a meter jump overnight, one from about 34% to 75% with nothing heavier than a daily routine running.

Cursor reported a [problem with billing and its usage dashboard](https://thenextweb.com/news/grok-bot-costs-unsustainably-high-musk-usage-limits) on Sunday and later marked it fixed. It isn't clear whether that caused any of the jumps.

## Why Musk says Grok Bot costs too much to run

Musk's reply is the only explanation SpaceX has offered, and his posts [didn't say how much Grok Bot costs](https://www.forbes.com/sites/siladityaray/2026/11/02/musk-says-grok-bots-costs-were-unsustainably-high-weeks-after-touting-rapid-growth/) or whether allowances were cut.

The comment came just as more people started paying. On SpaceX's October earnings call, president Gwynne Shotwell said Grok Bot had [800,000 paying weekly users](https://thenextweb.com/news/grok-bot-costs-unsustainably-high-musk-usage-limits), more than double the month before.

SpaceX's AI business also looked healthy on paper. Its October filing said AI made up 52% of the company's income, and its AI division [turned a $431 million profit](https://techcrunch.com/2026/11/02/elon-musk-throttles-grok-bot-limits-due-to-unsustainably-high-costs/), which is rare among AI companies. Neither number says what Grok Bot alone costs to run.

## What Grok Bot pricing gets you on each plan

Grok Bot comes with The X Subscription, the plan that [puts Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium on one bill](https://www.aiformortals.co/blog/x-subscription-grok-cursor). The cheapest paid tier, Plus at $8 a month, doesn't include Grok Bot. It starts at the $30 Premium tier, and the plans go up to $200 a month.

- **Premium ($30 a month):** four times the usage of Plus, with Grok Bot included.
- **Super ($100 a month):** 15 times the usage of Plus.
- **Ultra ($200 a month):** 50 times the usage of Plus.

SpaceX describes the tiers only by these multiples, with no hard number for how many Grok Bot jobs a week any of them covers.

Every paid tier draws from one weekly pool that covers Grok chat, images, video, Grok Bot and Cursor. So a weekend of Grok Bot jobs also leaves less for coding in Cursor, and the other way around.

## What Pat found when Grok Bot ran out on him

When Pat Simmons, who runs AI for Mortals, [gave Grok Bot, Meta Muse and ChatGPT Dots the same three jobs](https://www.aiformortals.co/blog/grok-bot-vs-meta-muse-vs-chatgpt-dots) in October, on the plans as they were then, Grok Bot did the best job on all three and ran out of usage doing it.

Mostly small test runs had already used 83% of his plan. He hit the limit in the middle of the second job and paid another $30 in pay-as-you-go usage to finish, and his verdict was that daily real work needs the $100 tier.

## How to keep an eye on your Grok Bot usage

Check the meter in two places: under **Usage** at the bottom of the Grok Bot app and on the Settings page. Over the weekend the two disagreed for some subscribers, so if one jumps, look at the other before you stop work.

Jobs Grok Bot runs on its own, like routines you set to repeat or checkouts with the cards saved in its [Vault](https://www.aiformortals.co/blog/grok-bot-vault), where it keeps your logins and cards, draw from the same weekly pool as the jobs you start yourself. Pausing the ones you don't need is the simplest way to leave room for the ones you do.

If you run out mid-job, pay-as-you-go usage lets you finish without waiting for the reset, which is what Pat did.

## What SpaceX still hasn't told Grok Bot subscribers

SpaceX hasn't said whether the limits changed, how big a week of usage is on any tier, or whether the weekend's jumps were a cut, a billing bug or both.

With no new numbers from SpaceX, subscribers only find out what their plan buys them when the meter runs out.
