What running coffee ads do right now

Pulled 2026-10-12 from Meta's Ad Library (live, US) with keyword searches for cold brew, cold brew concentrate, coffee subscription and specialty coffee, plus the running ads of Death Wish, Chamberlain, Wandering Bear, Stumptown, Blue Bottle, Intelligentsia, RISE, Cometeer, Grady's and Califia. Full write-up with every ad ID: research/ads.md. The creative I looked at is tiled in research/contact-sheet.jpg.

What the strongest ads share

HooksTime compression ("3.5 seconds that tastes like it took 3.5 hours", Jot 28122890600667053). The café as the enemy, with a number ("$6 every time, before tip", Grady's 2198381504428692; "$160/month vs $70", Wandering Bear 1369549198125044). Alerts ("🚨 News alert", Wandering Bear 1427197359342299; "NEW FLAVOR ALERT", Death Wish 2538999246566264). Third-party proof as the headline (Death Wish 1613851690124585).
FormatsVertical video, 8 to 55 s: hands-only product film with short captions (Cometeer 1549914910180324, Chamberlain 832883933023752) or a talking head with caption cards (Brew Bomb 573262615266790). Statics: one bold headline over a single brand color, product tilted, real ingredients floating (Wandering Bear 4252242365041099, Jot 1727614801902183).
OffersFirst-order discounts (Stumptown 15% off first five with code 15OFF5, 1261704229276459; Cometeer $46 off), free gift with first order (Jot $35 tumbler), free shipping thresholds, bundles. A code printed on the creative.
VisualEvery brand owns one color and fills the frame with it. Fridge and desk context shots: the product where it lives (Wandering Bear 1520000323215953). Chamberlain's lab set (945740055134506) is the one brand that built a world instead of a kitchen counter, and it jumps off the contact sheet.

Five patterns stolen

  1. 1
Time compression, made literal. The whole campaign is one line of Jot's shape: Steeped 18 hours. Poured in 8 seconds. It is a true coffee fact and the exact definition of a background agent.
  2. 2
The café math, per cup. 2 oz concentrate to 4 oz water or milk, 16 drinks a bottle, $1.13 a cup against $6 at the café. The arithmetic sits on the creative in brass numerals.
  3. 3
The alert as a hook, in our own dialect. Everyone says "news alert". Clanker already owns a status line, so the ads animate it: Running in the background... flips to Done.
  4. 4
Product hero plus real ingredients on one brand color. The bottle, drawn in code with the real label, on Midnight Navy with the tasting notes as floating chips, inside the World's Fair world instead of a kitchen.
  5. 5
A first-order offer with a code on the creative, shown where the bottle lives. Free shipping through October 31 with code RUNNING, next to the fridge and the desk.
02 · The campaign

It ran all night.

Full brief with every line of copy: campaign/brief.md

Steeped 18 hours. Poured in 8 seconds.

One audience

The delegator. 26 to 42, works at a screen, hands real tasks to an AI agent during the day and has a few minutes while it runs. Already drinks iced coffee in the afternoon, usually a $6 cold brew from the café downstairs. Believes good cold brew is something a café makes.

One big idea

It ran all night. A background agent is a job you hand off that finishes without you watching. Background Agent is cold brew that steeped 18 hours while the customer slept and worked. Their whole job is the pour. The status line flips from Running in the background... to Done.

The message

Brazil Cerrado, roasted in Chicago's West Loop, steeped 18 hours cold, bottled at 32 fl oz. House recipe: 2 oz concentrate, 4 oz water or milk, ice. 16 drinks a bottle, $1.13 a cup. Chocolate milk, toffee, orange peel.* Keeps 2 weeks once opened. *Tasting notes may contain hallucinations.

The offer

Free shipping on any order with a Background Agent bottle through October 31 with code RUNNING. Normally $6, free over $45, so it is a real saving on a single bottle and nudges a second bottle or a bag. CTA everywhere: Pour me one.

Voice

A good coworker who knows where the good coffee is. The customer is the hero for delegating; the clanker is a capable colleague. One AI tell per piece (the status pill, "Let me think step by step", the hallucination footnote). No em dashes. Numerals for numbers. Specific beats clever.

Look

World's Fair at night. Midnight Navy and Night Ink grounds, Fair Brass ornament, Expo Cream type, Thinking Amber only for the dots, Fountain Jade for the pill. Limelight headlines, Jost text. Sterling appears only as the kit's film still. Everything else, including the bottle, is drawn.

Eight scenes: you hit enter at 6:12 pm, the roastery steeps 40 pounds of Brazil Cerrado overnight, Sterling runs the batch for 18 hours, next afternoon the pour takes 8 seconds, the status flips to Done, the bottle, the offer. Voice, effects and a 1930s big-band cue mixed with ffmpeg; every frame drawn by video/video.html and piped through tools/render-video.mjs.

05 · The vertical cut · 1080 x 1920 · 48 s

Re-edited for 9:16

Same timeline, different layout: the terminal becomes a phone-height card in the upper third, the stills are re-framed as tall push-ins with type in the lower third, the recipe stacks, the bottle fills the height, and the offer is a full-screen story card. Nothing is cropped from the wide film; every scene has a vertical branch.

06 · Short-form · 1080 x 1920 · three hooks

Three shorts, three hooks

short-1 · The math $6 at the café. $1.13 at your desk. Built on the café-math hook (Wandering Bear, Grady's). 21 s.
short-2 · 8 seconds This took 18 hours. Your part takes 8. An on-screen counter runs the recipe. Built on the time-compression hook (Jot). 24 s.
short-3 · Running in the background Hand it off, open the fridge, pour, Done. Built on the status-alert hook, in the brand's While It's Thinking format. 24 s.
07 · How it was built

Every frame by code

Drawing library. src/clanker.js: brand tokens, font loading, Limelight and Jost type with tracking and wrapping, the deco frame with corner fans, speed lines, sunbursts and gauge, searchlights, stars, film grain and vignette, the jade status pill with pulsing dots, the terminal card, tasting-note chips, and the bottle (amber glass body, the kit's label mapped onto a cylinder strip by strip with cosine shading, highlights, cap, reflection). Also a drawn glass with liquid, milk cloud, falling ice and a pour stream.

Ads. ads/ads.html?ad=NN draws each ad at its exact pixel size; Playwright screenshots the canvas to ads/*.png.

Video. video/video.html?cut=launch|vertical|short1|short2|short3 defines a timeline of scenes with a seek(t) function. The renderer steps 30 frames a second, pipes PNGs into ffmpeg (libx264, CRF 17), then mixes the page's audio cues: voice lines, effects and music placed on the timeline with adelay, music ducked under the voice with sidechaincompress, limited and muxed as AAC.

Stills. The kit's Background Agent scene and logos, plus five generated film stills in the same world (the pour, the desk glass, the roastery, the fridge, the tasting-note tray). No stock footage, no video generators. Notes: BUILD_NOTES.md.
