What's working in coffee and cold brew ads right now

Research for the Background Agent launch (Clanker Coffee Co.). Pulled from Meta's Ad Library on 2026-10-12 with adlib.

How this was pulled

Query Type
cold brew, cold brew concentrate, coffee concentrate, nitro cold brew, iced coffee, coffee subscription keyword search, US, 30 per query
Death Wish Coffee, Black Rifle Coffee, Stumptown, Blue Bottle, Intelligentsia, Partners Coffee, La Colombe Coffee Roasters, Wandering Bear Coffee, Grady's Cold Brew, Cometeer, Atlas Coffee Club, Califia Farms, Starbucks, Dunkin', Liquid Death brand pull, US

What came back: 493 unique ads from 116 pages. After filtering out the supplement and real-estate noise that keyword search drags in, 392 ads from 54 beverage pages, all currently active. 228 of them started on or after 2026-08-01.

Raw JSON is in research/raw/, the digest script is research/digest.py, and the creative I downloaded to look at is in research/media/.

Shape of the market:

  • Formats. Dynamic creative (DCO) dominates: 268 of 392. Then video 47, catalog (DPA) 35, single image 31, carousel 9. 183 ads carry at least one video asset.
  • CTAs. "Shop now" on 246 ads. Then "Learn more" 50, "Order now" 47, "Get offer" 16, "Subscribe" 8. Almost nobody writes a custom CTA.
  • Offers. 38 ads lead with an offer: % off, free shipping, BOGO, free gift or code.
  • Season. It's October, so the feed is wall-to-wall pumpkin: Death Wish, Dunkin', La Colombe, Folgers, Walmart, Rook, Gaffle, Califia and Starbucks via Target all run fall-flavor drops. Nobody in this sample is talking about the workday, let alone the AI-assisted one. That's our white space.

The ads that matter, and what they do

1. Time contrast is the strongest hook in concentrate

Jot, ad 28122890600667053 (image, running since 2026-08-28). The creative reads "Cold brew in 3.5 seconds that tastes like it took 3.5 hours." over a hand dropping concentrate into a tumbler. One sentence holds the whole product story: the slow part already happened, so your part is fast. The offer stacks on top: a free $35 tumbler with the first order, plus a press pull-quote ("Jot makes the best iced coffee. Fight me..." - BuzzFeed).

Grady's Cold Brew, ad 2198381504428692 (video, since 2026-09-24, on five placements). "Drop a pre-measured coffee bag in cold water overnight. Wake up to rich cold brew concentrate." Grady's sells the overnight wait as a feature, not a cost.

NitroPress, ad 1475884330882877 (video). "Add your cold brew. / Pressurize. / Pour. / That's it." Three verbs, three cuts. Short process copy proves something is easy.

Read: the overnight steep is the most ownable fact a cold brew has. Fast brands sell it as "tastes like it took hours." A brand literally called Background Agent can sell it as the job that ran while you slept.

2. Price-per-glass math against the cafe

Grady's Cold Brew, ad 2198381504428692. The hook card: "it's not that $6 for cafe cold brew is too much / it's that you also have to: make the trip there, wait in line, pay tax + tip, put on pants." It's a list hook that turns price into hassle, then lands on "as low as $1" a cup.

Wandering Bear, ad 1369549198125044 (S'mores, since 2026-08-13). The body does the math out loud: "coffee shop cold brew runs ~$160/month. Wandering Bear runs ~$70. That's $1,080 back in your pocket per year. Just saying."

Javvy Coffee, ad 2404635569983581. "Still spending $6/day on iced coffee...?"

Read: concentrate buyers are cafe defectors. The $6 cafe cold brew is the competitor, and a specific per-glass number beats any adjective. That fits the brand rule "specific beats clever."

3. The comparison table and the chart

Liquid Death, ad 1288403139602929 ("You won't believe it's not soda", since 2026-05-19, three versions). A black poster: LIQUID DEATH vs TOP SODAS, with two cans over a table of sugar, calories, caffeine and coloring agents. No lifestyle shot, just the table. It has been running for five months.

Commonwealth Joe, ad 1449547617022832 (office coffee, since 2026-09-22). "Coffee preferences are changing." Split screen: "What offices provide" (drip machine, pod brewer) vs "What employees buy" (two iced coffees). Its copy names our audience outright: "employees are increasingly choosing iced coffee and cold brew on the way to work."

Caribou Coffee, ad 1802724414227601. "For the chronically indecisive, we've got you." The whole menu plotted on a chart with more caffeine / less caffeine and more sweet / less sweet axes.

Read: a diagram or table stops the scroll because it looks like information, not an ad. Our audience reads dashboards all day.

4. Bundle-threshold offers, not deep discounts

Horn & Hardart, ad 1727020158399522 (cold brew concentrate, since 2026-10-09). "Buy 2 bottles. Get a FREE tumbler." A pour shot into a tumbler, with the offer in the headline.

Wandering Bear, ads 987716200704862 and 475837938810914. "32oz Variety Packs 3-for-1" and "This 3-for-1 cold brew trial pack is SELLING OUT." The family started 2024-03-31 (ad 967501074748481), which makes it the longest-running cold brew ad in the sample. A long run like that usually means it's profitable.

Partners Coffee, ad 28511004181842270. "Subscribe & Save: 15% Off First 3 Orders ... (AND subscriptions ship free)". Stumptown, ad 1261704229276459. "15% off your first five orders and free shipping."

Cometeer, ad 1543607210613654. "FLASH SALE 44% off your first order!" That's the deep-discount end. It works for a venture-funded brand, but it isn't a small roaster's game.

Read: the longest runners don't use the biggest discount. They use a quantity threshold that raises order value: 2 bottles, a 3-pack, the first 3 orders. Clanker already ships free over $45, so 3 bottles ($54) crosses the line with no new discount at all.

5. Topical, native-feeling hooks and a world you'd recognize with the logo covered

Liquid Death, ad 2054840681894781 (video, Instagram, since 2026-08-18). "AI data centers use millions of gallons of water to cool servers. But we came up with a solution: drink Liquid Death Energy." This is a beverage brand riding AI as a topic. It's proof the subject is fair game in this category and nobody owns it yet.

Liquid Death, ad 747620751766037. A parenting-as-extreme-sport video. Big swings, one joke per spot.

Black Rifle Coffee, ad 2202492267335613 (image, since 2026-10-01). It sells this month's subscription release ("Gothic Serpent 3.0") on its collectible bag art alone: a full-bleed illustrated bag and tasting notes as specific as "juicy watermelon, sharp kaffir lime, rock candy sweetness."

Death Wish Coffee, ads 1138729662012578, 2538999246566264 and 1613851690124585. Same skull, same black-and-red system, a new flavor every few weeks. You could cover the logo and still know whose ad it is. Ad 1613851690124585 adds a press pull-quote ("The smoothest dark roast I've ever had", Scary Mommy).

Starbucks, ad 1580710297083934 (video, since 2026-09-29). "no one said it was easy." A lowercase behind-the-scenes production shot, styled native to the feed.

Read: the brands with the strongest pull own a recognizable world (Liquid Death's metal parody, Death Wish's skull, Black Rifle's collectible art) and use native, conversational hooks. Clanker already has the world: World's Fair deco, Sterling and "Feature No. 05 of 6". What's missing is a hook native to how our audience spends the day, which is inside a chat window, watching a status line.

Also noted

  • Atlas Coffee Club, ads 999501509768593, 1397865848579594 and 800404742727541. A talking-head UGC video, "Why I'm giving up 'Big Coffee' in 2026", re-cut and re-titled every few months since April 2025. The headline formula is iterated rather than replaced. We can't shoot people for this launch (every frame is code), so creator UGC is a phase-two test.
  • Cometeer runs creator whitelisting (ads 1770814687256749 via Chef Fatty, 919684194474189 via The Diary of a CEO, 1101251529257388 via Michael Tchao). Same note: phase two, with the UGC hashtag #LetTheClankerWork.
  • Rook Coffee, ads 1701040854262031 and 1842707476890787. An amber 32 oz concentrate bottle shot in moody, low-key light, plus "Ran out of cold brew again!?" subscribe-and-save copy. It's the same bottle category as Background Agent, which proves the dark, product-forward look works for this exact format.
  • Pumpkin fatigue. Death Wish 1851748852467374, Dunkin' 1085750004244408, La Colombe 1356505796638031, Folgers 1767351537603914, Walmart 1110050041615049 and Rook 1579379447209854 are all saying the same thing in the same month. Not saying it is the differentiator.

The five patterns we'll steal

  1. Time contrast: the slow part already happened. (Jot 28122890600667053, Grady's 2198381504428692) Why: it's the truest thing about cold brew and the exact meaning of our product name. Background Agent steeped all night; your part takes ten seconds. It's the campaign's big idea, the launch film's structure and Short 1.

  2. Per-glass math against the $6 cafe cold brew. (Wandering Bear 1369549198125044, Grady's 2198381504428692, Javvy 2404635569983581) Why: the cafe is the real competitor and the brand voice wants a real number. At 1:1 with water or milk, a 32 fl oz bottle makes eight glasses, which is $2.25 a glass. Grady's list hook ("you also have to... put on pants") turns that into a joke instead of a lecture. It's Short 2 and two statics.

  3. The comparison table and the chart. (Liquid Death 1288403139602929, Commonwealth Joe 1449547617022832, Caribou 1802724414227601) Why: our audience lives in dashboards and run logs, and a table reads as information, which stops the scroll. We set it in brass and Limelight so it reads as a World's Fair exhibit card, not a spreadsheet. It's the "Cafe vs Background Agent" static and the overnight run-log graphics in every video.

  4. A quantity threshold instead of a discount. (Horn & Hardart 1727020158399522, Wandering Bear 987716200704862 / 475837938810914, Partners 28511004181842270) Why: the longest-running cold brew ad in the sample is a 3-pack. Our existing free-shipping line ($45) means 3 bottles for $54 ships free: 24 glasses, no margin given away and nothing new for the shop to set up. It's the offer on every end card.

  5. A native AI hook inside a world you'd recognize with the logo covered. (Liquid Death 2054840681894781, Black Rifle 2202492267335613, Death Wish 1138729662012578) Why: AI is a live topic in beverage ads and no coffee brand has claimed it. We do it in the brand's own voice: a deco chat window, Sterling's three amber typing dots, "Great question!", and the jade status pill ("STATUS: RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND...") that's already on the bottle. It's Short 3, the notification static and the status pill that ties every asset together.

What we leave on the table on purpose: flavor drops and pumpkin (the whole category is there), flash-sale percentages (not a small roaster's game) and fake press quotes. We have no coverage yet, and brand rule 8 says if we don't know it, we don't say it.

Background Agent launch brief

Product: Background Agent, Feature No. 05 of 6. Cold brew concentrate, Brazil Cerrado (natural). Chocolate milk, toffee, orange peel. 32 fl oz bottle, $18. Client: Clanker Coffee Co., Chicago West Loop. Flight:* 4-week launch on Instagram and Facebook (Feed, Reels, Stories), plus Threads.

1. One audience

The hand-off crowd. People who start a long job on their AI (a refactor, a research pull, a 4,000-row cleanup), hit enter and walk away from the desk.

  • 25 to 40, remote or hybrid knowledge workers: developers, analysts, ops, founders, producers. Chicago metro first, then national DTC.
  • They already buy iced coffee or cold brew 3+ times a week, mostly from a cafe at about $6 a cup (Commonwealth Joe's ad 1449547617022832 describes exactly this habit shift).
  • They're fluent in the workday Clanker jokes about: status lines, run logs, "done" notifications. To them, a job that finishes while they sleep is the best feeling in the job.
  • What they want: a cold coffee that's as good as the cafe's, already made, that doesn't make them put on shoes.
  • What they believe: good cold brew is either a cafe errand or a fussy overnight project.

2. One big idea

THE OVERNIGHT RUN

Cold brew is the original background agent. You set it up, you walk away, and the work happens overnight while nobody watches. Background Agent is that job already finished: 32 fl oz of concentrate that steeped all night, so your morning starts at done.

We tell it the way our audience experiences a good handoff: a job log. Clock in at 11:52 PM. Status: running in the background. Out at 7:00 AM. Status: done. The customer is the hero who made the smart call; the coffee is the finished output waiting for them.

Campaign line: It ran all night. Payoff line: It ran all night. You just pour. Sign-off: Let the clanker work. (house campaign line) / drinkclanker.com

The device that ties everything together: the jade status pill already printed on the bottle. Every asset moves it from STATUS: RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND... to STATUS: DONE. That's the campaign's one AI tell per piece, and the rest of the copy plays straight.

3. The message

Background Agent is cold brew concentrate that steeped all night while you did something else. Pour it over ice, add milk, and your break starts now. Eight glasses a bottle, about $2.25 each.

Proof points (all true or brand-set):

  • Brazil Cerrado (natural), roasted in small batches in Chicago's West Loop.
  • Tasting notes: chocolate milk, toffee, orange peel. (Tasting notes may contain hallucinations.)
  • Steeped all night. Strained. Bottled at 32 fl oz.
  • Recipe (brand pick, confirm with the roastery before launch): 1 part concentrate to 1 part water or milk, over ice. 4 oz + 4 oz = one glass, so 8 glasses a bottle, $2.25 a glass.

4. The offer

Run it in batches: 3 bottles, $54, ships free.

  • Clanker already ships free over $45. Three bottles ($54) cross that line, so the offer needs no new discount and no new code: no margin given away, nothing for the shop to set up.
  • 3 bottles = 24 glasses = $2.25 a glass, against roughly $6 plus tip at the cafe.
  • Background Agent isn't on Autopilot (subscriptions cover 12 oz bags only), so the 3-bottle batch is how we build the repeat habit at launch.
  • Primary CTA: Pour me one (the house add-to-cart line). Offer assets use Pour me three.
  • Meta CTA button: Shop now.

Why this offer: the longest-running cold brew ad in the research is a 3-pack (Wandering Bear, live since March 2024), and Horn & Hardart is running "buy 2 bottles" right now. See research/ads.md, pattern 4.

5. Voice guardrails for this campaign

  • One AI tell per piece: the status pill, the run log, or "Would you like me to also...". Never two in one asset.
  • Sentence case headlines in copy; Limelight caps on screen. No em dashes.
  • No shame about delegating, no job-loss jokes, no "humans only". Sterling is a good coworker.
  • Numbers over adjectives: 32 fl oz, 8 glasses, $2.25, 7:00 AM.
  • Never name a real AI product or company.
