The difference between getting amazing results from ChatGPT and getting generic responses often comes down to one thing: how you craft your prompts.

After testing hundreds of prompt variations, I've discovered the patterns that consistently produce better outputs. Here are the templates that work.

The Anatomy of a Great Prompt

Every effective prompt has three key components:

  • Context: Give ChatGPT the background it needs
  • Task: Be specific about what you want
  • Format: Specify how you want the output structured

Template 1: The Expert Advisor

"Act as a [specific expert role] with [X years] of experience in [field]. I need help with [specific problem]. Please provide [specific type of advice] that considers [relevant constraints or context]."

Example: "Act as a marketing consultant with 10 years of experience in B2B SaaS. I need help with email subject lines for a product launch. Please provide 5 subject line options that consider our audience of busy executives."

Template 2: The Step-by-Step Guide

"Create a step-by-step guide for [specific task] aimed at [target audience]. Include [specific elements you want covered]. Format as a numbered list with brief explanations for each step."

Template 3: The Content Transformer

"Take this [type of content] and transform it into [new format] for [specific audience]. Maintain [key elements to preserve] while adapting the [elements to change]."

The key is being specific. Instead of "write me a blog post," try "write a 500-word blog post for small business owners explaining how to set up Google Analytics, formatted with clear headings and actionable steps."

Advanced Techniques

Chain of Thought: Add "Think through this step by step" to get more reasoned responses.

Role Playing: Have ChatGPT adopt different perspectives: "First, respond as a skeptical customer, then as an enthusiastic supporter."

Iterative Refinement: Use follow-up prompts like "Make this more conversational" or "Add specific examples."

Remember: ChatGPT is a tool that amplifies your thinking. The better your input, the better your output.
