Anthropic said the US government has lifted the export controls that took Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 offline, and that it would begin restoring access today. It closes a standoff that pulled the company's most capable public model almost as soon as it launched.
What happened
Fable 5 arrived on June 12 as the most powerful model Anthropic had ever released for general use. Three days later it was gone. The Commerce Department, citing national-security authorities, issued an export-control directive suspending access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for any foreign national, inside or outside the United States, including Anthropic's own foreign-national employees. In practice, that meant a global shutdown.
The trigger, according to reporting at the time, was a jailbreak that could get around the models' safety guardrails and turn them into more capable cyber tools than intended. Mythos 5 is Anthropic's strongest cybersecurity model, which is part of why the government treated it as sensitive.
Last week the block eased partway: Commerce cleared Mythos 5 for a set of trusted US organizations, while Fable 5 stayed offline and negotiations continued. The latest notice lifts the controls on both, and Anthropic says access starts coming back today.
Why it was a big deal
For most people the drama was less about the specific model and more about the precedent: a brand-new consumer AI product could be switched off nationwide by government order within days of launch. Anthropic complied, worked with the government on safeguards, and thanked the people who helped redeploy the models.
Now they are returning, and the one thing to watch is what they look like on the way back in. When a product gets pulled, renegotiated, and re-released, the version that returns is not always identical to the one that launched.
It's been weeks, and we've all been waiting for this one to come back.
