Claude Fable 5, Anthropic's most capable and most expensive model, was about to get pricier for anyone on a subscription. On July 7 the promotional window that let paid users run Fable 5 at no extra cost was scheduled to close. Anthropic has now pushed that date to July 12.
What actually changed
The extension is simple: the included access that was ending July 7 now runs through July 12 at 11:59 PM Pacific. It covers Pro, Max, Team, and premium seats on seat-based Enterprise plans. During the window you can put up to half of your weekly plan usage toward Fable 5 without paying anything beyond your existing subscription, and there is nothing to claim or activate. The Free plan is not included, and API access is billed separately at standard rates.
What happens after July 12
Once the window closes, Fable 5 leaves your plan's regular weekly usage. You can keep using it through usage credits, which are pay-as-you-go charges billed on top of your subscription, or switch to another Claude model and stay inside your normal limits. Fable 5 lists at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, which makes it the priciest model on Anthropic's menu. It also draws from your weekly allowance faster than other Claude models, so heavy users often hit the ceiling well before any deadline.
Why the date keeps moving
This is the second time the meter has been pushed back. When Anthropic redeployed Fable 5 on July 1 after a weeks-long government blackout, it set the included window to July 7 and said it would extend that window if capacity allowed. The July 12 date is the latest of those extensions, not a permanent change.
A few prompts to run before July 12
If you do knowledge work:
- List every repetitive task you did this week and ask Fable which ones it could automate, and how.
- If you've been meaning to revamp your website, now's the time: tell Fable what you want and have it design and build the new version.
- Give it a big decision you've been stuck on, with all the context, and have it lay out your options, weigh the trade-offs, and tell you where your thinking is weak.
If you write code:
- Point it at everything you've shipped and ask for the bugs, optimizations, and refactors it would make.
- Have it walk every major path in your app and write up where users get confused and what to fix.
- Hand it the feature you've been putting off because it's too complicated, and have it plan the approach and build a working first version.
My read is that this is a marketing play. Dangling the best model in the world (for now) at no extra cost for a few more days keeps people building their work around Fable right up until the meter starts.
Anthropic has said it aims to restore Fable as a standard part of its subscriptions once capacity allows, though no firm date is attached. Until then, Fable runs on a countdown: included now, metered after July 12, and eventually, if the company follows through, just another model in your plan.
