Anthropic turned Claude Fable 5 back on today, posting a two-word confirmation from its Claude account: "Fable 5 is back." We covered the shutdown and its slow reversal yesterday; the news now is that the model is actually live again, and we finally know the terms.
What you get, and the catch
Fable 5 is available in the model picker across Claude on the web, Desktop, and Mobile, and to developers in Claude Code (version 2.1.170 or later) and Claude Cowork. There's nothing to claim or activate.
For one week, it's free. From July 1 through July 7, you can put up to half of your weekly subscription limit toward Fable 5 at no cost beyond what you already pay. Once you cross that 50% mark, you either continue by paying per use with usage credits or switch back to a model like Opus 4.8 for the rest of the week.
The free window is the whole promotion. After July 7 at 11:59 PM Pacific, Fable 5 is no longer included in your plan's weekly limits, and the only way to keep using it is through those pay-as-you-go credits. It also draws from your allowance faster than other Claude models, so it runs down your week quicker than Opus or Sonnet would.
A comeback with an asterisk
The reception matched the terms. Anthropic staff and fans celebrated the return, with Alex Albert posting "Welcome back to the world Fable." Others were sharper about the one-week window, the fast burn on limits, and the shift to paid credits afterward. Reaction ran roughly half celebration, half complaint: happy to have the model, wary of the leash.
The clock is the whole story. Fable 5 is free only through July 7; after that it moves to pay-as-you-go usage credits and gets expensive fast, so get as much use in now as you can.
A few prompts worth running this week, depending on your work.
If you do knowledge work:
- List every repetitive task you did this week and ask Fable which ones it could automate for you, and how.
- Feed it your skills, goals, and assets and ask what small side business it could help you start in the next few weeks.
- Hand it your messiest spreadsheet or document and have it clean it up, structure it, and summarize what matters.
If you write code:
- Point it at everything shipped since Fable went dark and ask for the bugs, optimizations, and refactors it would make.
- Have it walk every major user path in your app and write up where users get confused and what to fix.
- Loop it every 24 hours to run a security check across your API endpoints.
After July 7, the trial is over and the credits meter starts.
