Midjourney isn't free on its website or in Discord. Its Free Trials page says no free trial is available on either one, and the only limited trial is in the niji·journey phone app. To make images on midjourney.com you pay for one of four plans: Basic at $10 a month, Standard at $30, Pro at $60 or Mega at $120. Paying for a year up front takes 20% off, which brings them to $8, $24, $48 and $96 a month.
Last checked November 5, 2026: every price, limit and plan feature on this page comes from Midjourney's own Comparing Midjourney Plans article and the other help pages linked below, read that day.

Is Midjourney free?
No. Midjourney's Free Trials article says "No free trial is currently available in Discord or the midjourney.com website," and its Getting Started guide tells new users to subscribe to a plan before making their first image.
The one exception is niji·journey, Midjourney's anime-style image app for iOS and Android, which the same article says has "a limited trial." The page doesn't say how much the trial includes.

Midjourney does hand out free fast time, but only to people who already pay. Each day the 2,000 members who rate the most images get an extra hour, and some surveys pay in fast time. Per the Earning Free Fast Time article, you need an active subscription to use it, and it expires 30 days after you get it.
Midjourney plans and prices side by side
Midjourney costs $10 to $120 a month, or $96 to $1,152 a year paid up front. All four plans are subscriptions that renew on their own until you cancel. This is what each one includes, from the Comparing Midjourney Plans article.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Yearly billing | Fast GPU time | Relax mode | Video resolution | Stealth mode | Image jobs at once |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10 a month | $96 a year ($8 a month) | 3.3 hours (200 minutes) a month | Not included | SD | No | 3 Fast |
| Standard | $30 a month | $288 a year ($24 a month) | 15 hours a month | Unlimited images | SD and HD | No | 3 Fast or Relax |
| Pro | $60 a month | $576 a year ($48 a month) | 30 hours a month | Unlimited images and SD video | SD and HD | Yes | 12 Fast or 3 Relax |
| Mega | $120 a month | $1,152 a year ($96 a month) | 60 hours a month | Unlimited images and SD video | SD and HD | Yes | 12 Fast or 3 Relax |
Source: Comparing Midjourney Plans, checked November 5, 2026. Every plan can buy extra fast time at $4 an hour, work alone in Discord direct messages and use its images under Midjourney's general commercial terms.
Standard is the cheapest plan with unlimited images in Relax mode, the slower queue that doesn't use up your fast hours. Pro is the cheapest plan with Stealth mode, which keeps your work off Midjourney's public gallery, and the cheapest with unlimited video in Relax mode. Mega doubles Pro's fast hours and lets you run up to 12 fast video jobs at once, against Pro's 6.
Companies have one more rule. Midjourney's Terms of Service say a company, or an employee of a company, with more than $1,000,000 a year in revenue must be on Pro or Mega to own what it makes. Everyone else owns their images and videos on any plan, even after cancelling, per the commercial use article.
What fast hours, Relax mode and Stealth mode get you
Fast hours are the GPU time your plan includes each month: time on the powerful graphics chips that turn your prompt into images. Midjourney's GPU Speed article compares it to the data on a phone plan, and the clock only runs while Midjourney is making something for you.
One image prompt usually takes about a minute of GPU time, the same article says, so Basic's 200 minutes covers roughly 200 prompts, and fewer if you upscale or make HD images. Its cost table lists 0.8 minutes for a standard-resolution prompt, 1.3 minutes for HD and 8 minutes for a batch of four standard-resolution videos. Fast time resets each time your plan renews, and unused time doesn't carry over.
Relax mode is the unlimited option on Standard, Pro and Mega. Prompts wait in a queue for free GPUs, which Midjourney says can take anywhere from 0 to 30 minutes, and people who use Relax less get shorter waits. Relax video is limited to Pro and Mega at standard resolution, and HD video only runs in Fast mode.
Turbo mode goes the other way: Midjourney says it can make images up to four times faster than Fast mode, and it uses twice as much fast time per image. The company calls it experimental.
When fast time runs out, you can buy more from the Manage Subscription page. Bought hours expire after 60 days, need an active subscription to use and can't be refunded.
Stealth mode is about privacy. Midjourney is open by default: per its privacy article, every image and video you make can turn up on the Explore page at midjourney.com, including ones made in private Discord servers. The Stealth Mode article says only Pro and Mega members can hide their work, and anything made in a public Discord channel is still visible to the people in that channel.
How to subscribe, log in and cancel
You subscribe on midjourney.com. Midjourney's How to Subscribe article walks through it:
- Log in at midjourney.com and open the Manage Subscription page.
- Scroll to the plans section. Yearly billing is selected by default, so click the "Monthly Billing" tab first if you want to pay month to month.
- Press Subscribe under the plan you want and pay through Stripe, Midjourney's payment processor.
A confirmation email with your invoice and receipt goes to the billing email you entered at checkout, which can differ from the one you log in with.
Logging in works through Discord or Google. Per the Logging In & Connecting Accounts article, there is no separate Midjourney username and password, and anyone who used Midjourney before August 2024 should log in with Discord first so their old images stay attached to the account. When we checked on November 5, 2026, the midjourney.com/app address showed a "not found" page; the Log In button is on the midjourney.com home page, and the site's menu has Explore, Create, Edit and Organize pages.
To change plans, use the Upgrade Plan or Downgrade Plan button on the same Manage Subscription page. The upgrade article says an immediate upgrade is discounted by any unused fast time and restarts your billing date from that day.
To cancel, click Cancel Plan on the Manage Subscription page. The cancellation article says you keep every feature, including leftover fast time, until the end of the billing cycle you paid for, and cancelling doesn't delete your images or make private ones public.
What is Midjourney, and is it still on Discord?
Midjourney is an AI image and video generator: you type what you want to see, and on its Create page it makes a set of four images, per the Getting Started guide. Its Video article says it can also turn an image into a 5-second video, which you can extend up to 21 seconds. The company describes itself on its home page as "a community-funded research lab of 60 people."
Yes, it still runs in Discord, and every plan works there and on the website. The Web vs Discord article says most tools are on both, and that the website makes some jobs easier, such as editing part of an image or reusing your own pictures as references. To make images in Discord, you connect a Discord account to your Midjourney account.
The default model is V8.2, released on July 24, 2026, according to Midjourney's Version article. V7 came out on April 3, 2025 and was the default from June 17, 2025 to June 9, 2026, and V6 came out on December 20, 2023. You can still pick an older version by adding --v and the version number to a prompt. Our Midjourney tool page tracks new versions and features as they ship, and the Midjourney company page covers the company itself.
Does Midjourney have a mobile app?
Midjourney's help pages point to one app: niji·journey, for iPhone and Android. It makes anime-style art with Midjourney's Niji models, which the Version article says Midjourney builds with the company Spellbrush. Its App Store listing names Midjourney as the developer and says accounts and subscription plans "can be synced with existing niji・journey and Midjourney accounts."
For the main Midjourney models, the website is the way in on a phone: the Getting Started guide covers sending prompts from the Create page "if you're using a mobile device."
Is Midjourney better than ChatGPT for images?
AI for Mortals hasn't tested Midjourney against ChatGPT, so this section compares what each costs and how you get in, from each company's own pricing page. ChatGPT's free plan includes limited image creation, while Midjourney has no free plan on its website.
| What you pay | Midjourney | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | No free plan or trial on the website or Discord | Free: limited image creation |
| $8 to $10 a month | Basic, $10 ($8 a month yearly): 3.3 fast hours | Go, $8: more image creation than Free |
| $20 to $30 a month | Standard, $30: 15 fast hours plus unlimited Relax images | Plus, $20: "more complex and accurate image creation" |
| $60 a month and up | Pro, $60, and Mega, $120: more fast hours, Stealth mode, Relax video | Pro, from $100: "unlimited and faster image creation" |

Midjourney's other bet: the Ultrasonic CT scanner
Midjourney Medical is a new division of the company working on a full-body scanner it calls "Ultrasonic CT." On its Midjourney Medical page, the company says a scan "takes as little as 60 seconds," uses "no radiation, no powerful magnetic fields - just sound and water," and is "in many ways superior to even MRI machines." Those are Midjourney's own claims about its device.

The plan is large. Midjourney says it wants to put about 50,000 scanners around the world over six years and do a billion full-body scans a month, starting with a "Midjourney Spa" in San Francisco that opens at the end of 2027 with hot tubs, saunas, cold plunges and 10 scanners.
Our post on Midjourney's Ultrasonic CT body scanner covers the Butterfly Network chip deal behind it and why skeptics compared the launch to Theranos, the blood-testing startup that collapsed when its tests didn't work. The medical page has its own sign-up form for updates, the spa waitlist and clinical trial volunteers.
Questions people ask about Midjourney's price
What is the Midjourney Basic plan?
Basic is the cheapest plan: $10 a month, or $96 a year, with 3.3 fast hours a month. It has no Relax mode, so once the fast hours are gone you buy more at $4 an hour or wait for your plan to renew.
Which Midjourney plan should I get?
It depends on how much you make and who sees it. Standard ($30) is the lowest price for unlimited images in Relax mode. Pro ($60) is the lowest price for keeping your images private, and it is the minimum for a company with more than $1,000,000 in yearly revenue, per the plan comparison. Basic ($10) covers roughly 200 image prompts a month in fast time.
How much does Midjourney video cost?
Video uses your GPU time like images do, at a higher rate. A batch of four standard-resolution 5-second videos takes about 8 minutes of fast time and four HD videos about 26 minutes, per the Video article, and you can make one or two at a time to save time. HD video needs Standard or above. For comparison, our Kling post explains what Kling's video models cost in credits.
Can I use Midjourney images commercially?
Yes, on any paid plan, with two exceptions in the commercial use article: a business making more than $1,000,000 a year needs Pro or Mega, and an image you upscaled from another user's work belongs to them.
What happens to my images if I cancel?
They stay. Cancelling doesn't delete your images or account history, private images stay private, and you can resubscribe later.
Can a school buy one Midjourney plan for its students?
No. Midjourney's student billing article says each student needs their own account and subscription, paid with their own payment method; a school can reimburse students instead.
Do I need Discord to use Midjourney?
No. You can sign up with Google and use only midjourney.com; Discord is needed only if you want to make images inside Discord, per the login article.
