Claude Can Now Answer Questions About Your Own Money

Anthropic launched Personal Finance in Claude: link your bank and card accounts through Plaid, then ask where your money went. Here's who gets it, how to set it up, exactly what Claude can see, and how to check its math.

Anthropic launched Personal Finance in Claude, a beta that lets you connect your bank and card accounts and then ask about your money in plain words, like "Where did my money go this month?"

Claude personal finance is rolling out gradually on the Pro, Max and Ultra plans in the US, on the web, the desktop app and the iPhone and Android apps. It isn't on the Free, Team or Enterprise plans.

What you can ask Claude about your money

Anthropic's own example starts with "Where did my money go this month?" Claude adds up October's spending, $4,309.37 so far, and splits it by category, with more than half going to rent and utilities and $1,024.51 to food and drink.

From there you keep asking. In the same example, Claude finds a membership renewal, then answers "So what's left before payday?" by listing the four payments due before the next paycheck and the $1,393.22 that would be left in checking.

Anthropic says Claude can also point out charges that hit twice, surprise fees or a bill that's crept up all year. It can answer "Am I spending more than I make?", explain a term like APR, and add up the interest your credit cards have charged you this year.

If you'd rather see it than read it, ask for a weekly spending chart, a calendar of what's due or a dashboard you keep adjusting. Three questions worth trying first:

"What changed in my spending since last month, and which transactions caused it?"

"List every subscription I'm paying for and when each one renews."

"How much interest have my credit cards charged me this year?"

How to turn on Personal Finance in Claude

Once it reaches your account, Personal Finance appears in Claude's side menu. If you don't see it, look under More.

1. Click Personal Finance, then Get started.

2. Add your money goals if you want Claude to keep them in mind. This step is optional.

3. Click Link accounts with Plaid, pick your bank and sign in to it inside Plaid's window. You have 10 minutes to finish there.

4. Repeat for other banks. The Help Center says you can link up to 16, and only US banks work.

After that, the Personal Finance page shows your spending, cash flow, subscriptions and upcoming bills, with suggested questions to tap.

What Claude can see once your bank is linked

Plaid is a service that connects apps to banks, and it's how you sign in. You type your bank password into Plaid, so Claude never sees it. Access is read-only: Claude can't move, manage or invest your money.

For each account you link, Anthropic's Help Center lists what Claude gets:

  • The bank's name, plus each account's name, type and last four digits
  • Balances and credit limits
  • Up to two years of transactions, with the amount, date, merchant, category and your bank's description

Loan and investment accounts show up with balances and limits only, without your holdings, rates or loan terms. One thing to know: if your bank puts a full account number inside an account name or a transaction description, Claude may see that too.

Is Claude Personal Finance private?

Anthropic says chats inside Personal Finance aren't used to train its models. Money questions you ask in a regular chat follow your usual privacy settings, so ask them inside the Personal Finance page if that matters to you.

Once a chat has used your account data, Claude is designed not to save it to memory or bring it up in later searches. Anthropic also says there are no ads or sponsored recommendations, and Claude doesn't sell cards or loans.

You can unlink an account at any time in Claude or at Plaid's own site, my.plaid.com. If you unlink your last bank, your Personal Finance dashboard is deleted for good.

Read-only access through Plaid, no training on the hub's chats and easy unlinking are the main protections. If you're still unsure, start with one credit card and leave your checking account out.

How to check Claude's numbers before you trust them

Anthropic says Claude can make mistakes and this isn't investment advice. Its own advice is to ask which transactions are behind any number before you act on it, and to check important figures with your bank.

The Help Center adds two practical reasons a total can be off. Balances can be a day or two behind your bank, and an account you've linked through two different logins can get counted twice.

Your linked accounts don't work everywhere in Claude, though. They can't be used in scheduled tasks, Cowork, Claude Code or Claude Duet, and may not work inside projects.

Claude Personal Finance vs ChatGPT Finances

ChatGPT's Finances, OpenAI's own read-only money tool, already does this on ChatGPT's free plan in the US, so Claude's version is mainly news for people who already pay for Claude.

If that's you, start with one card and ask what changed since last month, then ask which transactions are behind any number before you trust it. If you're not sure which plan you're on, our guide to what Claude's Free plan includes and what Pro, Max and Ultra add lays it out, and Ultra is the plan that replaced Claude's $200 tier.

This is also the second time in a week Claude has asked to read something personal. Patients can now connect their athenahealth medical records to Claude. Anthropic says it next wants to work with banks, wealth managers and other financial firms so Claude can help with bigger money decisions.
