Cursor vs Claude Code: Which One to Use, by Job, and What Each Really Costs
Claude Code comes with Claude's Pro, Max and Ultra plans at $20, $100 and $200 a month. Cursor runs $0 to $200 a month, and Claude models cost extra there. Which to pick for which job, from both companies' own pages.
On this page
Use Claude Code if you want Anthropic's Claude models for a flat monthly price: it comes with every paid individual Claude plan, starting with Pro at $20 a month. Use Cursor if you want one coding tool that switches between models, or if you already pay for The X Subscription, which includes it. Cursor's plans cover its own models (Grok and Composer 2.5), while Claude in Cursor is billed on top at API list price, and only on the $30 Premium plan and up.
Last checked November 5, 2026: the prices on cursor.com/pricing and claude.com/pricing, Cursor's models and pricing docs, and the newest Claude models Cursor lists (Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5).
Cursor vs Claude Code: which should you use?
Claude Code fits if Claude is the model you want to work with every day, because the Claude plan you already pay for covers it. Cursor fits if you want several companies' models in one place, or if you already have The X Subscription.
If you want to code with Claude every day: Claude Code
Claude's pricing page lists Claude Code as part of Pro ($20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly), Max ($100) and Ultra ($200), and Free doesn't include it. Each step up gives more room: Max gets "5x Pro usage every 5 hours and every week" and Ultra "10x Pro usage every week" (Claude pricing).
If you want to switch between models: Cursor
Cursor "supports frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, SpaceXSI, and more," according to its docs. Its own models come out of the plan's weekly usage pool, and Claude, GPT and Gemini are paid "at the model's API list price from the first request, paid from your prepaid credit," on Premium and above.
If you already pay for The X Subscription: Cursor
Cursor is sold as part of The X Subscription, which brings together Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium in one plan. Its $30 Premium tier is described there as "the benefits of SuperGrok, Cursor Pro, and X Premium+, previously $90/month combined." We broke the bundle down in our post on The X Subscription.
Cursor AI vs Claude: what you're actually comparing
Claude is Anthropic's family of AI models, and Claude Code is Anthropic's own coding app that runs them. Cursor offers Claude models as well: its docs list Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5, and Haiku 5.5 arrived in Cursor on October 7, 2026.
Cursor CLI vs Claude Code
Both install with one terminal command (the terminal is the text window developers type commands into). Cursor's CLI installs with curl https://cursor.com/install -fsS | bash and starts with agent. Claude Code installs with curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash (Homebrew and WinGet work too) and starts when you type claude inside a project folder.
Cursor's CLI "lets you interact with AI agents directly from your terminal to write, review, and modify code," with Agent, Plan and Ask modes, and you can push a conversation to a cloud agent "to continue running while you're away" by starting a message with & (Cursor CLI docs). Claude Code's terminal version can also run from scripts and automated build checks, and a long task started on the web or in the Claude mobile app can be pulled back into your terminal (Claude Code docs).
Claude Code vs Cursor's agent
Cursor's Agent is on every plan, including Free with limited requests. On the $8 Plus plan it runs Cursor's own models (Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6, Grok 4.5 and Composer 2.5) at fixed settings, and cloud agents and automations start at Premium (Cursor docs). Claude Code can split a task across several agents working at once, run on a schedule, and keep going on the web or the Claude phone app, per Anthropic's docs.
Is Cursor better than Claude Code?
Neither is better across the board; it depends on which AI models you want and how you want to pay. Nobody at AI for Mortals has tested Cursor, so this page has no speed or code-quality result for it, only what each company says its product does and costs.
The sourced differences come down to three things. Claude Code runs Claude, and the Claude plan price covers it. Cursor's plan price covers its own models, with Claude, GPT and Gemini paid per use from prepaid credit on Premium and up. And each plan carries extras the other doesn't: a Claude plan also covers Claude's chat apps, while Cursor's plans add Grok and X perks such as the Premium checkmark (Cursor pricing).
Cursor Ultra vs Claude Code Max: what each costs
Both top individual plans cost $200 a month. On Claude's side that plan is now called Ultra: Anthropic renamed Max 20x to Ultra on October 30, 2026, so the $200 "Claude Code Max" plan people search for is Ultra today, and Max is the $100 plan.
Cursor Ultra gives "50x more usage compared to Plus" and "earliest access to all products & models," with Claude and other third-party models "billed separately by usage" (Cursor pricing). Claude Ultra includes Claude Code, "10x Pro usage every week," no 5-hour limit for verified accounts and $200 a month in API credits (Claude pricing).
| Plan | Price a month | Usage, in the company's words | Claude Code included? | Claude models included? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cursor Free | $0 | "Limited agent requests" | No | No, not available |
| Cursor Plus | $8 | "Shared AI usage pool" | No | No, "Only Grok models are available on this plan" |
| Cursor Premium | $30 | "4x more usage compared to Plus" | No | No, billed at API list price from prepaid credit |
| Cursor Super | $100 | "15x more usage compared to Plus" | No | No, billed at API list price from prepaid credit |
| Cursor Ultra | $200 | "50x more usage compared to Plus" | No | No, billed at API list price from prepaid credit |
| Claude Free | $0 | "Limited usage every 5 hours and every week" | No | Yes (Sonnet and Haiku) |
| Claude Pro | $20 ($17 billed yearly) | "More usage than Free, every 5 hours and every week" | Yes | Yes |
| Claude Max | $100 | "5x Pro usage every 5 hours and every week" | Yes | Yes |
| Claude Ultra | $200 | "No 5-hour limit" (verified accounts) and "10x Pro usage every week" | Yes | Yes |
Prices from cursor.com/pricing, Cursor's models and pricing docs and claude.com/pricing, checked November 5, 2026. Cursor's Teams plan starts at $30 per user a month, and Enterprise is custom.

Cursor Pro vs Claude Pro
Cursor Pro at $20 a month is a legacy plan: it keeps working for existing customers, and new customers start on The X Subscription, where Cursor names Premium ($30) as the comparable tier (Cursor's legacy plans page). Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly ($200 up front), and it includes Claude Code (Claude pricing).

Claude Code vs Cursor pricing if you want Claude inside Cursor
To use Claude in Cursor's own agent, you need Premium ($30) or higher plus prepaid credit, because Claude is billed per use from the first request. Cursor's model price list puts Claude Opus 5.5 at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, and Sonnet 5.5 at $2 and $10 (tokens are the small chunks of text a model reads and writes). Teams and Enterprise add a Cursor Token Rate of $0.25 per million tokens on top, and individual plans don't pay it.
Paying yearly lowers both bills: Cursor charges $300 a year for Premium, $1,000 for Super and $2,000 for Ultra (Cursor docs), and Claude Pro is $200 a year. We list every Cursor plan from $0 to $200, explained, and what Claude's Free, Pro, Max and Ultra plans include.
What's the actual difference between Cursor and Claude Code?
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent, and it runs Anthropic's Claude models. Cursor is a separate coding product that lets you choose between models and bills Claude as an add-on.
Anthropic describes Claude Code as "an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools" (Claude Code docs). Cursor calls itself "a coding agent for building ambitious software" (Cursor docs).
They also run in different places. Claude Code works in the terminal, as VS Code and JetBrains extensions, in a desktop app for macOS and Windows (Linux is in beta on Ubuntu and Debian), on the web, and in the Claude app for iOS and Android. Cursor runs as its own editor, as a CLI and as cloud agents you can check on the web or a phone at cursor.com/agents, and Cursor for iOS launches cloud agents or remotely controls agents running on your computer.
Both support the same add-ons: MCP (a standard way to connect an AI tool to other apps and data), skills, hooks and subagents, according to each company's docs. If a project already has an AGENTS.md instruction file for other coding agents, Claude Code can read it. For what's new on each, see what Claude Code does and what's changed and Cursor's latest features and model changes.
Can you use Claude Code inside Cursor?
Yes. Anthropic's VS Code docs include an "Install for Cursor" link for the Claude Code extension, and you sign in with "any paid Claude subscription (Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, or Enterprise) or a Claude Console account," with no API key required (Claude Code in VS Code).
The extension bundles its own copy of Claude Code for its chat panel. To type claude in the editor's built-in terminal as well, the docs say you also need the standalone install from the section above.
Which one suits someone who doesn't code?
Claude Code has two ways in that need no terminal setup. The Claude desktop app "includes Claude Code, so you don't need to install the CLI separately" (a paid plan is required), and Claude Code on the web runs in your browser "with no local setup" (Claude Code docs).
Pat Simmons built Murmur, a free, open-source Mac dictation app, with Claude Code. In his words: "I rebuilt the part of Wispr Flow I use...in about 20 minutes with two prompts and no Swift knowledge." He added: "The only hands-on parts were approving macOS permission dialogs and pasting error logs back into Claude so it could fix them." The full build is in how he built Murmur with Claude Code.

Our beginner guide got a working invoice app out of Claude Code from one plain-English paragraph in 90 seconds, with the prompts to build your own: build your first app with Claude Code, no coding needed. Cursor's Free plan lets you try its agent for $0 with limited requests (Cursor pricing).
Questions people ask
