Notion Lets You Assign Tasks to Claude and Cursor Like Teammates
Notion's new External Agents invite outside AI agents like Claude and Cursor into your shared workspace as named members, so you can hand them a task and @-mention them like coworkers, for now in a waitlisted alpha.
Notion already holds a lot of teams' actual work: the docs, the tasks, the project boards. It also already had its own built-in agents. On June 24, it went a step further and started letting outside agents work in there too. With a new feature called External Agents, you can bring tools like Claude and Cursor into a shared Notion workspace and treat them like teammates.
What it does, and how it is different
Notion shipped its own Custom Agents last year: agents Notion builds and runs inside your workspace, firing on schedules or triggers to update databases and post reports. External Agents flips that. Instead of Notion's own agent, it invites outside agents, Claude, Cursor, OpenAI's Codex, or a custom one your team built, to join the workspace as named members with their own identity and permissions.
Once in, you treat one like a colleague. Assign an item from a team board, or @-mention the agent, and it goes to work. The task moves through the familiar stages, planning, building, shipping, so everyone can see where it stands. When it finishes, the output lands right there: a drafted doc, a research summary, a bug fix, a pull request. Nothing gets exported to a separate tool or buried in a chat thread.
How the Claude version is billed
One detail worth knowing, because it caught a few people off guard: the Claude agents run on Anthropic's infrastructure but are hosted by Notion, and they bill through Notion's own credits, charged per run. You cannot plug in your own Anthropic subscription. So bringing Claude into Notion does not mean using the Claude plan you already pay for, it means paying Notion for the runs.
The Slack version already exists
If this feels familiar, it should. Anthropic shipped Claude Tag this week, which lets you @-mention Claude in a Slack channel and hand it work like a teammate. Notion's move is the same idea in a different home, with two twists: it is not limited to Claude, and it lives in your docs and task boards rather than a chat thread.
The catch: it is a waitlist
External Agents is in alpha, gated behind a waitlist, with no broad launch date or full pricing. So this is a preview of where team work is heading more than something most people can switch on this afternoon. Reaction is strongly positive, with the usual caution about how reliable agents are once they are loose on real tasks.
Notion already let you build agents, but they ran on Notion's own AI and mostly handled Notion chores, updating pages and posting reports.
External Agents lets you bring in a heavyweight from outside, like Claude or Cursor, to do the harder work: writing the doc, building the thing, fixing the code, right inside your workspace.
It's the same move Anthropic made with Claude Tag in Slack yesterday, except Notion opens it to several agents, not just Claude.
