Google is adding Short Video Overviews to NotebookLM, its tool for turning your own documents into summaries and audio rundowns. The new feature takes whatever sources you load in and produces a 60-second vertical video that narrates the key ideas over simple animations.
What shipped
NotebookLM already turned your uploads into written summaries and podcast-style audio. It later added longer, cinematic video overviews. The new piece is the short format: a portrait, phone-shaped video, about a minute long, with a narrator walking through the main points and light animation on screen.
Under the hood it runs on Nano Banana 2 Lite, Google's new fast and cheap image model, which is what makes generating a whole video quick rather than a slow render. The feature is rolling out to paid Google AI Ultra and Pro users first, with free access coming later. For the moment it only works with English-language sources.
What it's good for
The honest use case is the pile of things you know you should read and never do: a dense report, a research paper, a policy or benefits document, a long set of meeting notes. Instead of skimming, you get a short, narrated version that explains the gist, and you can share it with someone who would never open the original file.
It is also a small sign of where this is going. Turning source material into a finished video used to take an editor. It is quickly becoming a button, the same way turning notes into a summary already is.
From the demo, the video animation actually looked really compelling, more polished than I expected for something generated on the fly.
It is TBD how well it holds up once you feed it your own messy, complicated sources.
But it is another fun little way to learn something, which is exactly what I love about NotebookLM. It keeps finding new formats to turn a pile of material into something you will actually engage with.
