OpenAI Doubles Usage on ChatGPT Pro Plans

OpenAI doubled the Work and Codex allowance on its $100 and $500 ChatGPT Pro plans and called off a cut to the $200 plan. Here's what changes on each plan, who actually gets more, and how to stretch the new allowance.

OpenAI doubled how much work you can hand to Work and Codex on two of its three ChatGPT Pro plans, the $100 and $500 ones. Work and Codex are the ChatGPT modes that take on longer jobs and write code.

It also called off a cut to the third Pro plan, at $200, that would have shrunk longtime subscribers' allowance on October 29.

The news came as day 25 of the 28 days of upgrades that Tibo Sottiaux, who leads ChatGPT and Codex at OpenAI, promised in early October.

What changes on each Pro plan

OpenAI sells three Pro plans, named after their monthly price. Only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast, the speed mode for its GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol models.

Here's what each one gets, per OpenAI's help page:

  • Pro 100 ($100 a month): twice its previous Work and Codex allowance. Its weekly limit on GPT-6 Pro messages in regular chat stays the same.
  • Pro 500 ($500 a month): twice its previous Work and Codex allowance, with the same weekly GPT-6 Pro chat limit as before.
  • Pro 200 ($200 a month): everyone ends up on the larger allowance and the higher weekly GPT-6 Pro chat limit. Whether that's a doubling depends on when you joined (more below).
  • Business Premium, OpenAI's plan for work teams, gets the same doubling, Sottiaux said.
  • ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month doesn't change.

You don't need to do anything. Existing subscribers get the new allowance automatically, without waiting for their plan to renew, and OpenAI says there's no need to cancel and sign up again.

Sottiaux also said OpenAI will keep offering extended limits for Dots for now, and that using your Dot still doesn't count against your regular allowance.

Who on the $200 plan actually gets more

On September 29, the same day it launched the $500 plan, OpenAI emailed $200 subscribers that their Work and Codex usage would drop at the same price. That email, quoted by subscribers online, put the cut at 20 times the Plus allowance down to 10 times, and GPT-6 Pro chat from 200 to 100 messages a week. OpenAI itself has never published these numbers.

People who were already subscribed kept the larger allowance until October 29. People who signed up for the $200 plan after the announcement got the smaller one from day one.

Now the cut is canceled. If you'd been on the $200 plan since before the announcement, you keep the allowance you already had, so nothing grows for you. If you joined since late September, your allowance doubles to match the longtime subscribers.

Sottiaux's post says OpenAI is "doubling all usage limits" on every Pro plan. The help page is more precise: the doubling covers Work and Codex, the weekly GPT-6 Pro chat limits on Pro 100 and Pro 500 stay the same, and on the $200 plan only the lower allowance doubled.

Twice the allowance won't always mean twice the work

OpenAI says a larger allowance "does not guarantee twice as many completed tasks." How much each job uses depends on the model, how much you give it to read, how hard it reasons, the tools it calls and the speed you pick.

Speed costs the most. Compared with Standard mode on the same model, Fast mode uses your allowance 2.5 times as quickly, and Ultrafast on Pro 500 uses it 8 times as quickly.

So the easy way to make the doubling go further is to leave Work and Codex on Standard for long jobs you aren't watching, and save Fast or Ultrafast for the moments you're sitting there waiting. Lighter models help too: OpenAI built GPT-6.1 Terra so a paid plan covers far more routine tasks.

OpenAI backs off a cut after a month

A month ago, the same day it launched the $500 plan, OpenAI told $200 subscribers their Work and Codex usage would drop by half at the same price. Calling that off and doubling the other plans a month later looks like OpenAI trying to keep its heaviest users happy.

It lands near the end of a month of upgrades and Codex usage resets, and it's aimed at OpenAI's biggest spenders.

If you pay for Pro, open Codex or Work this week and check your usage under Settings, then Usage. Longtime $200 subscribers will see the same allowance as before, and everyone else should see more room.
