Meta's AI research lab just showed something that sounds like science fiction: a system that reads the sentence you are typing directly from your brain, with no surgery and no implant.
What Meta showed
The system is called Brain2Qwerty v2, and it decodes full sentences from brain activity in real time. The earlier version, v1, was published the same day in the journal Nature. The new one goes beyond guessing letter by letter to reconstructing whole words and their meaning.
Here is how it was built. Nine volunteers each spent about ten hours sitting under a large brain scanner, typing roughly 22,000 sentences between them. The scanner reads the faint magnetic fields your brain gives off, which pass through the skull more cleanly than the electrical signals older head-cap methods picked up. The AI then learns to rebuild each sentence from those raw brain signals alone, without ever watching the keystrokes.
How good it is
On average the system got about 6 in 10 words right, and for its best participant closer to 8 in 10, with roughly half of all sentences coming out with no more than a single wrong word. That is a large jump over v1, whose best participant landed under 5 in 10, and it is far ahead of older non-invasive approaches that struggled to crack one word in ten. It is still error-prone, and it is nowhere near the accuracy of methods that surgically implant electrodes.
The no-surgery angle
The reason this is notable is the "non-invasive" part. The brain-computer interfaces that get the most attention, like Neuralink, require surgery to place electrodes inside or on the brain. Meta's approach reads from outside the skull entirely. The trade-off is real: the scanner is a room-sized machine you cannot wear, and the accuracy trails the implanted systems. Meta frames the work as research toward assistive communication for people who have lost the ability to speak or move, and it open-sourced the code and shared the data.
Nothing really to do with this one, but it's pretty crazy.
It's cool they're open-sourcing it too, though I'm not sure how I feel about Meta being the one reading our brains.
Mostly it's a sign of how fast even this kind of tech is moving. It's interesting when you think about how the operating system has evolved: from a screen you click around, to a lot of it being voice-driven now, to this, just reading it straight from your head.
