TikTok Adds an AI Shopping Assistant and One-Click Checkout
TikTok's new Shopping Assistant answers your questions about a product you just saw, and Buy Direct lets you buy it from the For You feed in one click.
TikTok announced two shopping tools on Monday at Advertising Week in New York. Shopping Assistant is an AI chat that answers questions about a product and helps you buy it. Buy Direct lets you buy from a brand straight from the For You feed, in one click, without leaving the app.
Both are built to close the gap between seeing something in a video and owning it.
How Shopping Assistant works
TikTok's business blog walks through it. You see an ad for a pair of hiking boots and tap through to the product page, which opens inside TikTok.
A chat window appears, and you can ask whatever you'd normally go hunting for: whether the boots run true to size, what colors they come in, when they'd ship, whether your size is in stock.
The answers come from information the brand supplies, so the assistant is working from the seller's own product details. It also keeps track of what you've told it you want as the chat goes on, so you don't have to repeat yourself.
TikTok says the assistant will show up in several places across the app. Without Buy Direct, the purchase still happens on the brand's own checkout page, which opens inside TikTok's built-in browser.
How Buy Direct works
Buy Direct skips that last trip to the brand's checkout page. It uses the card and address you've already saved, so buying from a brand's video takes one tap, and you can track the order inside TikTok afterward.
The brand stays the seller of record, which means your order is with the brand even though TikTok ran the checkout. TikTok built Buy Direct with Shopify, Stripe, Salesforce and Shoplazza, among others, and brands connect their stores through the Universal Commerce Protocol, a shared standard for letting AI agents place orders with a store.
This goes beyond TikTok Shop, the marketplace TikTok launched in the US in September 2023. TikTok Shop sells through its own storefront. Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant put the buying inside the regular feed and the brand's own ads.
Why TikTok built this
TikTok already sells a lot of stuff. A PF Global report TikTok published last week says 54 million Americans have bought something after watching a TikTok video, and eMarketer estimates TikTok Shop did about $15.8 billion in US sales in 2025.
The leak in that system is the moment you get curious and leave. If you go to ChatGPT to ask whether the jacket runs small, TikTok risks losing the sale, and ChatGPT keeps adding shopping features of its own, including virtual try-on for clothes last week.
There's a practical reason for brands to like this setup too. Outside AI agents trying to shop for you can get stopped at the door.
When I gave OpenAI's Dots, its always-on assistant, a shopping list and asked it to buy everything on Amazon, Amazon blocked its browser straight away. TikTok's assistant, answering from the brand's own details inside its ad, doesn't run into that wall.
When you'll see it
TikTok hasn't said which countries get the tools first or when. For now, TikTok is testing them with a limited set of brands that sign up through its sales team, so you'll likely see them on some brands' ads before others.
Alongside the two shopping tools, TikTok announced Lead Agent, a chat for bigger decisions like a car or a college program. It answers questions from information the business provides and collects your contact details when you're ready, either in TikTok's direct messages or on the business's own website.
The pause where you go check the sizing or read reviews is where a lot of impulse buys die, and TikTok built both tools to close it. The video that sold you on something can now answer your questions and take the order.
I like the assistant, since getting a straight answer on sizing beats digging through comments. One-tap checkout from the feed makes me a little uneasy, because it puts the buy button right where the urge to buy is strongest.
