ChatGPT Adds Virtual Try-On for Clothes
OpenAI rolled out a Try On button in ChatGPT's shopping results worldwide, which shows clothes and accessories on a photo of you.
ChatGPT can now show you what a jacket looks like on you before you buy it. OpenAI added a Try On button to ChatGPT's shopping results, plus a Favorites section for saving what you find, and both are rolling out worldwide on the web and in the mobile app.
How Try On works
The button shows up on product listings for clothes and accessories. Tap it, take or upload a selfie (TechCrunch and Digital Trends say a full-body photo works too), and ChatGPT makes an image of you wearing the item. It runs on ChatGPT Images 2.5, the image model OpenAI released in September, which the company says gives more natural lighting and richer textures and generates images faster.
It also works on things you found somewhere else. In a normal chat, you can upload a picture of a piece of clothing, including a screenshot from any store's site, and ask ChatGPT to show it on you.
According to TechCrunch, OpenAI also pointed to two other ways to shop with it. You can describe a style and have ChatGPT find the pieces to complete the look, or upload a photo of a celebrity's outfit and ask it to track down the items for sale.
Favorites, and the photo it keeps
Favorites is a save button. Tap the bookmark icon on any product and it goes to Favorites in your ChatGPT Library, where you can also sort finds into folders. Your try-on images are saved there alongside the products.
Your photo stays too. OpenAI's help page says reference photos are saved for future try-ons, so you don't have to upload one every time. You can swap or remove yours under Settings, then Personalization, then Reference photos.
Like your chats, that photo can help train OpenAI's models. The try-on help page doesn't single out reference photos, but OpenAI's data policy says that on personal ChatGPT accounts it "may use your content to train our models," unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone" under Settings, then Data controls.
The same help page warns that try-on images "may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size," and it suggests checking the merchant's measurements, product details and return policy before you buy.
OpenAI's first try at shopping
OpenAI has tried to sell things inside ChatGPT before. In September 2025 it launched Instant Checkout, which let US users buy from Etsy sellers without leaving the chat, with Shopify stores like Glossier and Skims promised next.
OpenAI scaled Instant Checkout back this March because few people used it to buy. At the time, OpenAI wrote that "the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide," and said it would let merchants use their own checkout while it focused on product discovery. An OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch the company was deprioritizing Instant Checkout as a standalone feature, and a source told The Information that people "weren't using the chatbot to actually help them make purchases."
OpenAI's shopping help page still says some merchants may offer an Instant Checkout option. Try On is a product discovery tool, which is the part of shopping OpenAI said in March it would put its effort into.
Google got here first
Google has offered the same idea for well over a year. It started testing a try-on tool that uses your own photo in Search Labs in May 2025, then launched it across the US that July in Search, Google Shopping and Google Images. Google asks for a full-length photo, while ChatGPT can work from a selfie.
Digital Trends wrote that OpenAI is "basically catching up with Google," and said the open question is whether shoppers will trust an AI's picture of themselves. TechCrunch also noted Google's head start, saying it remains to be seen whether ChatGPT becomes people's first stop for this kind of shopping.
OpenAI's first shopping push asked people to buy inside the chat, and shoppers mostly didn't. Try On goes after an earlier moment, the one where you're looking at a sweater and wondering whether it suits you, which Google has been serving in Search since July 2025.
Helping with "will this suit me" is an easier sell than asking people to hand ChatGPT their card. The trade is a photo of your face kept on file until you delete it, which is a fair amount to hand over for a second opinion on an outfit.
