Meta now has its own image generator, and it is landing exactly where you already spend your time. On July 7 the company launched Muse Image, the first image model built by Meta Superintelligence Labs, the AI group Meta assembled last year under Alexandr Wang. Codenamed Mango internally, it is the second release from that team after the Muse Spark model in April.
What it is
Muse Image creates pictures from a text prompt, from your own photos, or from a mix of both. Early reviews put its quality above Google's current image AI and a step behind OpenAI's. Meta calls it "agentic," meaning it does not just generate on the first pass. It works with Muse Spark to reason through your prompt, search the web for context, and plan a layout before it draws anything.
Where you'll find it
This is the part that matters for most people. Muse Image is free inside the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories, and WhatsApp direct chats, starting in the US. It powers more than 30 new AI effects for Instagram Stories. Facebook, Messenger, and Meta's Advantage+ advertising tools are next, and a Muse Video model is already in development. Everyday creation is free; past a limit, you are prompted to pay for a Meta One subscription.
What it can do
A few features stand out. You can upload a photo and edit the result by drawing or writing directly on top of it, rather than rewriting your prompt over and over. You can snap a picture of a room and ask for a redesign using real products from the web or Facebook Marketplace. It renders legible, styled text inside images, enough to build a simple infographic or a working QR code. And you can @mention an Instagram account to pull that person's public photos into your image. That last one raises obvious questions, so Meta added an opt-out setting and puts an invisible watermark on every image Muse creates.
Meta just dropped a capable image generator into apps that a couple billion people already open every day. Most of them were never going to sign up for Midjourney or ChatGPT to make an image. Now they do not have to.
So you are about to see a lot more AI images in your feed and your group chats. The quality is not at OpenAI's level yet, but that is not the game Meta is playing. Its edge is distribution: the tool is free, and it is already sitting inside the apps where people spend their time.
